Behind the Counter: A Thank You.
Share
When I first started thinking about opening Cardera, I honestly had no idea what it would become.
I knew I loved trading cards. I knew I wanted to build something of my own. And I knew I was willing to bet on myself, even if it meant taking a path that wasn't guaranteed to work out.
What I didn't know was just how many people would end up becoming part of that journey.
As we've continued to grow and hit milestones that once felt impossible, I've found myself reflecting more and more on how we got here. The truth is, Cardera has never been built by one person. It's been shaped by every conversation, every customer, every staff member, every mistake, and every lesson we've learned along the way.
To my team, thank you.
Thank you for believing in a vision that, at one point, only existed in my head. Thank you for caring about the little things, taking pride in your work, and treating every customer who walks through our doors like they matter. Watching each of you grow alongside the business has been one of the most rewarding parts of this entire experience. I know we don't always get everything right, but I couldn't ask for a better group of people to learn, adapt, and keep pushing forward with.
To our customers, thank you for giving us the opportunity to do what we love every single day.
Whether you've spent thousands of dollars with us or simply stopped by to hang out for half an hour, you've helped shape what Cardera has become. Some of my favourite days aren't the busiest ones—they're the afternoons where customers are engaging with each other, showing off new pickups, debating the next set, or just kickin' it in the shop. Somewhere along the way, the store became more than a place to buy trading cards. It became a place where people wanted to spend time, and that's something I'll never take for granted.
As strange as it sounds, I'm also grateful for the moments that didn't go according to plan.
The failed ideas, expensive mistakes, inventory issues, difficult conversations, and all the setbacks that felt frustrating in the moment but forced us to become better afterward.
Every one of those experiences taught us something we couldn't have learned any other way. Looking back, many of our biggest improvements came directly from moments where we fell short. Those failures weren't the end of the story—they were the beginning of doing things better.
One thing I've always wanted Cardera to be is authentic. I never wanted to build a business that simply copied what everyone else was doing. I wanted to create something that reflected our values, our personalities, and the kind of experience we would want if we were the customer walking through the door.
We're still figuring out how to do that even better.
We'll continue to make mistakes, but we will continue to learn from them and we'll continue trying to build something that feels a little different from everything else in this space.
If there's one thing this journey has taught me, it's that success isn't measured solely by sales, growth, or the next milestone. Those things matter, of course, but they aren't what I think about when I lock the doors at the end of the day.
I think about the conversations, the friendships, the laughs across the counter, chirping customers (respectfully of course 😊). I think about the stories people have trusted us enough to share. Those are the moments that remind me why taking this leap has clearly been one of the best decision I’ve ever made.
So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Thank you for supporting a kid with a dream of owning a business. Thank you for allowing me to bet on myself and helping turn that dream into something far bigger than I ever imagined.
I’m incredibly proud of what we've built together, but I honestly believe we're just getting started.
I can't wait to see where the next chapter takes us.
